Premium squares: how double and triple scores stack
Letter multipliers apply first, then word multipliers, then the 50-point bingo bonus. A premium square counts only on the turn a tile is first placed on it — but if one play covers two word premiums, both apply, and they multiply together.
The order of operations
- 1. Tile values. Add up what each tile in the word is worth. Blanks are 0 no matter what letter they stand for.
- 2. Letter premiums. Double or triple any tile sitting on a DL or TL square — but only tiles placed this turn.
- 3. Word premiums. Multiply the whole word total by 2 for each DW and 3 for each TW the play covers. Two DWs is 4×; two TWs is 9×.
- 4. Other words formed. Score every new word the play creates separately, applying the same premiums to each one.
- 5. Bingo bonus. Add 50 if you used all seven tiles. It is never multiplied.
3L vs 3W: which is worth more?
A triple letter square triples one tile. A triple word square triples everything. Take a 24-point word containing an 8-point J: the 3L turns the J from 8 into 24, adding 16 points. The 3W turns the 24-point word into 72, adding 48. The word premium wins in almost every realistic case — and if you can cover both, the letter premium is counted first, so the tripled J is itself tripled again.
When a premium square stops counting
A premium square is spent the moment it is covered. On every later turn the tile on it scores face value, even when your new word runs through it. This is the single most common scoring mistake: re-counting a double word square that an earlier play already used. The exception is within one turn — a tile placed on a premium square that forms two words at once earns the premium in both of them.

Is 3L or 3W better in Scrabble?
A triple word square is almost always worth more. 3L triples one tile: on an 8-point J it adds 16 points. 3W triples the entire word: on a 24-point word it adds 48. Only prefer the 3L when you can put a very high tile on it and your word is short — and the best plays use both at once, since the letter premium is applied before the word multiplier.
Can a double word score be used twice?
Only within the same turn, never again later. A premium square counts on the turn a tile is first placed on it. If one play covers two double word squares, the word is doubled twice — that is 4×. On any later turn, tiles already on those squares score at face value.
Can you get two triple word scores in one play?
Yes. A word that reaches two triple word squares is multiplied by 3 twice, so 9× the word total. It requires a word long enough to span them — a triple-triple is the highest-scoring play shape in the game.
Do double letter squares count twice?
A double letter square doubles its tile once, on the turn that tile is placed. If that tile forms two words at once — one across and one down — the doubled value counts in both words, which is the one case where it genuinely pays twice in a single turn.
Do letter or word multipliers apply first?
Letter multipliers first, then word multipliers. Work out each tile's value, double or triple any tile sitting on a letter premium, add them up, then multiply the whole total by any word premiums the play covers. Doing it the other way round gives the wrong answer.
Does the 50-point bingo bonus get multiplied?
No. The 50 points for using all seven tiles are added after every multiplier has been applied. A bingo across a triple word square scores triple the word, then plus 50 — not 150.
