How Scrabble scoring works
Scoring a Scrabble turn is straightforward once you know the order: add the tiles, apply letter premiums, then word premiums, then the bingo bonus. Here’s each step, with a worked example.
Add up the tile values
Every letter has a fixed point value (see the complete letter values chart). Start by summing the value of each tile in the word you just played.
Apply letter premiums (first)
If a tile sits on a double-letter (DL) or triple-letter (TL) square, multiply just that tile’s value before doing anything else. A K (5) on a triple-letter square is worth 15.
Apply word premiums (second)
Now multiply the whole word’s total by any double-word (DW) or triple-word (TW) square it covers. If a word covers two word squares, they stack — two double-word squares make ×4.
Add the 50-point bingo bonus (last)
If you played all seven of your tiles in this turn, add a flat 50 points after the multipliers. This is called a bingo.
Score blanks as zero
A blank tile is worth 0 points no matter which letter it represents — even on a premium letter square. It can still trigger a word multiplier for the rest of the word.
A worked example
Suppose you play QUARTZ, with the Q on a double-letter square and the whole word crossing a triple-word square.
- Base tiles: Q(10) + U(1) + A(1) + R(1) + T(1) + Z(10) = 24
- Double-letter on Q adds another 10 → 34
- Triple-word multiplies the total: 34 × 3 = 102

Letter multipliers apply first. Add up each tile's value, doubling or tripling any tile on a premium letter square, then multiply that total by any double- or triple-word square the word covers. The bingo bonus is added last, after multipliers.
How much is a bingo worth in Scrabble?
A bingo — playing all seven of your tiles in one turn — is worth a flat 50-point bonus on top of the word's score. It is added after any premium-square multipliers.
Can you stack two word multipliers in Scrabble?
Yes. If a single word covers two double-word squares, the multipliers combine to ×4; a double-word and a triple-word give ×6; and two triple-word squares give ×9. This only happens on longer words that reach two premium squares at once.
Do premium squares count every turn?
No. A premium square only counts on the turn a tile is first placed on it. On later turns, tiles already on premium squares are scored at face value.
